In response to "Is there a doctor in the house on Maui?" (The Maui News, Sept. 18):
Why are salaries less on Maui than on Oahu or in Mainland states? What is the reason for this?
We need our politicians to write a bill that if you are taking care of a population that includes Native Hawaiians, you can get your student loans paid off. Hey, Democrats, you without a platform, Hirono, Schatz, Gabbard and Hanabusa: Listening? Are you able to write this bill?
Hawaii's Native Hawaiian population, which includes people who are of more than one race, stands at 298,000. Nationally, there are 560,000 Hawaiians.
There is a program (see the internet address below) in which health-care providers can get $40,000 if they spend two years for taking care of American Indian or Alaska Native communities. There are 6.6 million Native Americans and Alaska Natives in our country.
Doctors and nurses graduate with a heavy loan debt. You can hire more doctors and nurses by paying off a percentage of their loans per year working here. They would come. Do not say you cannot get doctors or nurses. Say that you are "not willing to pay for doctors or nurses."
Kaiser Maui should build a large condo/apartment complex for the doctors to live in for the first years, until they can afford a home of their own.
