Sen. Maize Hirono's recent remark, "Just shut up and step up. Do the right thing for a change," sure lit up some Maui boys.
In recent letters to the editor, they’ve called Hirono names, attacked her character, accused her of man-hating and claimed she disgraced all of Hawaii.
On the contrary, Sen. Hirono's remark was spoken in the context of Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court and the controversy surrounding it regarding sexual assault allegations against him. I believe her remark was specifically aimed at men, including those among her congressional colleagues, who are either complicit in or themselves guilty of covering up, dismissing and/or making excuses for abhorrent behavior; discounting reports of intimidation, abuse, assault, or rape; and societal and political cowardice.
Sen. Hirono confronted men and some Maui guys don't like that. But thankfully they don’t speak for all males. "I have talked to a lot of men who are really happy. I said that, because they want to be part of the movement," Hirono said in Sept. 21 AP article.
Thank goodness for evolved and enlightened men and thank you Sen. Hirono; you are what a tough elected official can and ought to be and I believe most men and women on Maui and nationwide understand your comment for what it was; a courageous challenge.
