Mike Victorino is the pro-housing candidate

An Oct. 11 letter chastised mayoral candidate Mike Victorino for once proposing the repeal of the so-called county “Show Me The Water” rule. Victorino — a former member of the county Board of Water Supply and longtime County Council Water Committee chairman — made that proposal because he understood that Show Me The Water is a detriment to the development of housing local residents can afford. The measure’s purpose was actually anti-housing: it is aimed squarely at blocking residential housing subdivisions.

Mike Victorino understands the serious impact the lack of housing is having on Maui’s working families: multi-generations living in the same home. Many families paying 50 percent or more of their income to rent a simple apartment. The stories tore Mike up and caused him to act.

The Show Me The Water measure has been a contributing factor to our housing shortfall. The measure just about put all of the midsized developers — who could not draw on former plantation water sources like the bigger corporate builders — out of business. It means that the county does not participate in supplying water in support of new housing, making the homes that are built that much less likely to be affordable.

The choice in this election is stark. Mike Victorino is the pro-housing candidate. His opponent Elle Cochran’s record shows that she has been consistently anti-housing, affordable or not. If housing is important to you, then the choice is clear.
