Abolish department and its overseeing commission
In light of the results of the stellar (not!) audit of the county liquor commission and liquor department (The Maui News, Nov. 29), I would suggest that the best thing to do for our community would be to abolish the department and its overseeing commission entirely.
The County Council should review the regulations that now exist and decide which ones are actually worth keeping and which ones need to be scrapped. Then turn over the licensing functions to the Finance Department and put all the monies generated into the county’s general fund. As for enforcement, put that function under the umbrella of the Police Department’s vice section.
