Every time I drive by the derelict former University of Hawaii Maui College student dorms at the corner of Kaahumanu Avenue and Wahine Pio in Kahului, I have to shake my head at the condition of the buildings and the neglect exhibited by UH-Maui in allowing the buildings to rot for years. The site is an eyesore.
In my opinion, these buildings could have been converted to transitional housing for the homeless right where it's needed long ago and with little effort. Instead, UH-Maui will evidently allow the buildings to continue to rot until the end of their lease on the land, and the county will inherit another site that will just continue to deteriorate as the years go by.
The university and the county both share the responsibility for this foul-up. What a waste.
Shame on all of you.
