Letter about traffic citation quotas refuted
Regarding The Maui News letter to the editor on Dec. 19 about the MPD “end-of-year revenue shortfall,” the Maui Police Department, along with other police departments, do not have traffic citation “quotas”! An officer, eight hours on patrol, is expected to observe traffic violations and issue citations, “unless you patrol with a bag over your head,” like a lieutenant years ago used to say in the lineup before shift. Officers also are in certain areas regarding “selective enforcement.” The monies from the traffic violations go the the state of Hawaii, not the police departments.
The letter writer made these statements, he should show his proof in black and white. Either “put up or kulikuli waha (keep quiet)!”
