It appears that Mainland politics has firmly landed on Maui. After reading The Maui News' informative article on Michele McLean's five-hour (plus two hours of executive session) ordeal in front of the Maui County Council's Governance, Ethics and Transparency Committee, I could only shake my head. Why would anyone want to offer public service if they have to endure such petty, vindictive attacks.
After then watching the complete hearings on Akaku, I can only say to Ms. McLean: Mahalo for being courageous enough to step up and serve!
One bit of unintended humor from the hearing: It was laughable to hear Council Chair Kelly King assert she was "not political," while other council colleagues stated that the process was "not prescripted," all the while apparently reading from already prepared remarks as they gave their comments.
It is going to be an interesting two years!
