Construction zone traffic being managed poorly

2 min read

Because of the ongoing construction at the Kuihelani/Maui Veterans/Puunene intersection, traffic backup going eastbound on Kuihelani Highway has been very bad recently. The morning of March 23, it took me nearly an hour to drive 3.7 miles from Maui Lani to the Subaru dealership. The signage and cone pattern allowed for just a trickle of cars to turn right from eastbound on Kuihelani Highway to go southbound on Maui Veterans Highway, and I waited through multiple light phases at the intersection to get to my destination, making me late for an appointment.

This morning of March 25, the backup on eastbound Kuihelani was almost as bad, and the signage and cone pattern were even more confusing -- I saw other drivers creating their own traffic lane on the striped buffer zone between the eastbound and westbound lanes of Kuihelani. Making the turn to go south on Maui Veterans Highway remained very difficult.

This is the worst construction zone traffic management I have ever seen. I was glad to see two police officers directing traffic at the intersection over the lunch hour March 25, but I think they need to be there at all times while this construction is going on, until the work is completed. The construction people clearly have no idea what they are doing when it comes to managing all of the traffic that funnels through this intersection.
