UH narrowly maintains bowl hopes

2 min read

Viane Moala blocked a field goal as time expired to give the University of Hawaii football team a 14-13 win over Fresno State on Saturday in Fresno, Calif.

The victory kept the Rainbow Warriors (5-7, 4-4 Mountain West Conference) in contention for the postseason. A win over Massachusetts next week at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu would mean UH could be invited to the Hawaii Bowl.

Hawaii also finished .500 in conference play for the first time since joining the Mountain West Conference in 2012.

Moala blocked a 49-yard attempt by Kody Kroening.

Hawaii had gone in front on Steven Lakalaka's second touchdown run of the game, a 2-yarder with 59 seconds left. That capped a 12-play, 76-yard drive.

The Bulldogs (1-10, 0-7) fell to 0-3 under interim coach Eric Kiesau, who took over after Tim DeRuyter was fired.

Keelan Ewaliko, a Baldwin High School graduate, had three receptions for 25 yards for UH, and also returned a kickoff 21 yards.

The Rainbow Warriors' Dru Brown passed for 227 yards with an interception.
