UH football to open, close regular season with conference road games

The Maui News

The Mountain West Conference released its 2018 football schedule Thursday, and the University of Hawaii will open and close the regular season on the road for the first time in school history.

The Rainbow Warriors, who went 3-9 overall and 1-7 in conference play last year, will open the season with a conference game at Colorado State on Aug. 25. They will then play four nonconference games — at home against Navy (Sept. 1), Rice (Sept. 8) and Duquesne (Sept. 22) and at Army (Sept. 15) — before resuming their MWC slate at San Jose State on Sept. 29 and against Wyoming on Oct. 6 at Aloha Stadium.

Hawaii plays at BYU on Oct. 13 before ending the season with five straight MWC games — at home against Nevada (Oct. 20), Utah State (Nov. 3) and UNLV (Nov. 17) and on the road against Fresno State (Oct. 27) and San Diego State (Nov. 24).

There is the possibility that games could be moved to Thursdays or Fridays due to national television considerations.

Seven of UH’s opponents this year played in a bowl game last season — Colorado State (Gildan New Mexico), Navy (Military), Army (Lockheed Martin Armed Forces), Wyoming (Famous Idaho Potato), Fresno State (Hawaii), Utah State (NOVA Home Loans Arizona) and San Diego State (Lockheed Martin Armed Forces).

The Mountain West championship game is set for Dec. 1 at the higher-ranked of the two divisional champions.
