Micah Au-Haupu and Logan Keely of Kamehameha Schools Maui made history with their victories on Friday, the first day of the Island Movers Track and Field State Championships at Kamehameha Kapalama in Honolulu.
Au-Haupu won the boys shot put while Keely claimed first place in the high jump. It is the first state track and field individual golds ever for Kamehameha Maui, according to Hawaii Prep World.
Au-Haupu had a throw of 51 feet, 3.25 inches, just a fourth of an inch better than runner-up Alama Uluave of Punahou. Lahainaluna's Apakasi Felemi (44-8.75) finished eighth.
In the girls high jump, Keely and Iolani's Kellie Okamura both cleared 5-1, but Okamura did so in more attempts than Keely, giving the Warriors junior the state title. King Kekaulike's Charlie Abreu (4-10) was fifth while Kihei Charter's Alisha Dingman (4-10) was seventh.
Four other field event finals were held Friday, along with trials for the running events.
Baldwin's Edward Omine was one of three boys pole vaulters to clear 14-4, but Omine finished runner-up to Punahou's J. Kai Yamafuji on attempts. The Bears' Shawn Silva and Warriors' Hunter Worth both cleared 12-10 to finish sixth and eighth, respectively.
Other top-eight finals finishers included Baldwin's Darrian Cremer (fifth in boys long jump, 20-7.75) and Sascia Campos-Ewaliko (fifth in girls triple jump, 36-1.25), and Molokai's Tai-Li Tangatailoa (fifth in girls discus, 113-7).
Nine MIL runners qualified for individual finals.
In girls competition, Maui High's Alyssa Mae Antolin qualified first in the 100 and 200 meters, with times of 12.24 and 25.49, respectively. Also making the 100 final was King Kekaulike's Isabella Dillon, who qualified sixth in 12.63.
Seabury Hall's Veronica Winham won her heats in the 800 (2:26.20) and 1,500 (4:48.37) to qualify second and first, respectively. The top qualifier in the 800 was her Spartans teammate, Chloe Gangnath, in 2:24.82. Gangnath also qualified fourth in the 1,500 in 5:01.71, while Seabury's Kallalei Ryden qualified 10th in 5:04.73.
The Spartans' Ameera Waterford qualified eighth in the 100 hurdles in 16.35.
Na Alii's 400 relay team and the Spartans' 1,600 relay team also qualified for finals.
On the boys side, Baldwin's Rey Cadiz won his heats in the 110 hurdles (14.20) and 300 hurdles (40.37), qualifying first and second, respectively. Cadiz, the defending state champion in the 110 hurdles, set a state meet record with his 110 trials time, beating the mark of 14.44 set by Maui High's Dana Navarro-Aries in 1999.
The Bears' Darrian Cremer qualified fifth in the 200 in 22.89 and Maui Prep's Damon Wakefield qualified ninth in the 1,500 in 4:18.63.
Baldwin's 400 relay team qualified second in 43.06.
No trials were conducted for the boys and girls 3,000, with only the finals being run today.
