Cowell helps lead Rainbow Warriors to season-opening sweep

King Kekaulike High School graduate Colton Cowell had a match-high 12 kills as the fourth-ranked University of Hawaii men’s volleyball team opened the season with a 25-17, 25-11, 25-13 victory over New Jersey Institute of Technology in a Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Warrior Classic match on Thursday at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.
Cowell, a redshirt junior, also had three digs, three blocks and an ace while starting for just the second time in his college career. He had no errors on 15 swings, hitting .800.
Stijn van Tilburg added 11 kills while hitting .562 for UH, which hit .619 as a team.
The Highlanders (0-3) got 11 kills from Alvaro Gimeno.
The Rainbow Warriors play Concordia-Irvine today before wrapping up the tournament Saturday against Southern Cal.
