Maui's Cody Young drops in on a wave during the Volcom Pipe Pro on Tuesday at the Banzai Pipeline on Oahu's North Shore. Young advanced through the fifth round and quarterfinals of the World Surf League Qualifying Series 3,000 event before bowing out in the semifinals. He placed third in his semifinal heat with a two-wave score of 8.17, behind eventual winner Jack Robinson (16.43) of Australia and runner-up Barron Mamiya (16.10) of Oahu. An equal-fifth finish continues a strong start to the year for Young -- he won the season-opening Sunset Open last month for his first QS title. Two other Maui surfers -- Billy Kemper and Dusty Payne -- were eliminated in the fifth round.
