Shark attack reported at Hookipa Beach Park

Male surfer suffered injuries to left arm, leg

A male surfer was the apparent victim of a shark attack at Hookipa Beach Park late Friday afternoon, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources said.

The Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement received the report of the shark bite from Maui police at about 5 p.m., said DLNR spokeswoman Deborah Ward.

The victim, a Maui resident, was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center with injuries to his left arm and leg, she said. Witnesses reported seeing a 5-foot shark, possibly a reef shark.

Ocean conditions were windy, choppy and murky Friday afternoon, Ward said.

DLNR officers responded to the scene to notify ocean users from Mama’s Fish House to Maliko Bay to clear out of the water, she said. Shark warning signs were being posted along the 2-mile stretch of shoreline.

The beaches will remain closed until noon Saturday, pending an assessment of nearshore waters by county lifeguards.

No further details were available.
