A 30-year-old Kahului woman died after being struck by a hit-and-run driver shortly before 8 p.m. Friday on Pulehu Road, south of Hookele Street in Kahului, police reported Saturday.
The woman was identified as Destiny Delima.
She had been walking near the east shoulder of the roadway at 7:54 p.m. when a vehicle hit her, police said. The driver fled the scene.
Delima sustained fatal injuries and was found dead at the scene, police reported.
A preliminary police investigation revealed that the hit-and-run vehicle is possibly a white 1995 to 2001 model Ford Explorer, police said. The vehicle sustained front-end damage.
Police were investigating whether speeding, drugs or alcohol were involved.
Delima’s death marked Maui County’s 22nd traffic fatality this year, compared with 21 at the same time last year.
