Letter: Dogs purposefully left out in storm?

Why can hunters neglect their animals? I called about these dogs being left out in the hurricane and the lady that came by said there wasn’t anything wrong being done. The storm is only going to get worse and they are just going to let them suffer. Alec HalaifonuaMakawao

Letter: Scholarship for design of Waiohuli Makai plan

On behalf of the Waiohuli Makai Homelands Advocacy Group, I thank a Honolulu philanthropist for an Aug. 2 contribution of $3,000. The donor, a prominent isle developer, designated the sum toward a scholarship in order for a University of Hawaiʻi senior or master’s-degree candidate in architecture, community planning or engineering to create a Waiohuli Makai site plan.  Waiohuli Makai is the project name of a proposed 1,200-lot Hawaiian Homes development on 4,780 acres in Upcountry Maui. Ten years ago, Maui Hawaiian homestead leaders had proposed this vision for a Waiohuli Makai ...

Letter: Conscious, virtuous, vital members of community

In 1984, I arrived in Maui. I was startled to notice that members of various Hongwanjis seemed long-lived and retained faces and auras, respectively, vital and bright. Over time, I have had personal relationships with many members of this branch of Buddhism. Members of any religion or other organization will tell a keen observer a lot about their institution or teaching. Members of this form of Buddhism have stood out throughout the years as remarkably conscious, virtuous and vital members of this community. I don't know many particulars of this form of Buddhism, but the people have ...

Letter: Technological fixes, not meaningful reform

Congress continues to spend billions subsidizing industrial meat and dairy production even as these industries contribute significantly to climate change, water pollution, and other environmental problems (Euronews, Feb. 23, 2026). Instead of addressing the root causes of these impacts, policymakers are investing even more in a system that increasingly relies on technological fixes rather than meaningful reform. Americans are encouraged to recycle, drive less, and reduce their carbon footprints, yet taxpayer dollars continue to prop up industries that undermine those same climate ...

Letter: Parking fund helps visitors contribute to maintenance

In response to Jeffrey Dennison’s Aug. 2 letter, “Disheartened with paid beach parking spreading,” I appreciate his concern about preserving access to Maui’s beaches. We all share that goal. One important fact deserves emphasis: Park Maui is free for kamaʻāina, all day, every day. Hawaiʻi residents with a valid Hawaiʻi driver’s license park free at participating Park Maui beach locations. Residents who prefer not to use the app can simply scan their license at a kiosk—no personal information is retained from kiosk transactions. Park Maui is about managing a limited ...

Letter: Guest editorial revealed columnist for what she is

Froma Harrop is a wolf in FOX's clothing. She showed why in an “Opinion” op-ed that appeared in The Maui News lead editorial spot July 15-26. At this time in the degradation of one of the noblest democratic experiments in the history of the world, do you want to vaunt her Evil Leader direct adulation? With appreciation though for what you do to inform us of much else. Judy EagleWailuku
