Did we fail to hear the cries of ruin from previous west Maui fires? Did we forget what happened one year ago? Did we intentionally ignore the destruction even though evidence remains to be seen? How about running opinion by those who include more than social media handles requiring research only perhaps allowing a response? Our tourist-dependent economy is fizzling as tourists hit their tipping point. Rather than an aloha welcome, Hawaii is nickel and diming our chief economic engine. Tourists have noted Hawaii’s haughtiness with our “stick it to ‘em” attitude. Entrance to state parks and beaches can have a daily family cost of $30 plus a $1.78 order processing fee. Hawaii’s nearly 18 percent accommodation taxes are among the highest anywhere. Now that our Hawaii Supreme Court has decided that it is ok to take huge numbers of small fish from our reefs so they can be sold to the aquarium trade and shipped worldwide, it is up to the state Department of Land and Natural Resources to issue permits for the decimation of our small reef fish populations. Is anyone paying attention to this? Does DLNR think this is what we need or want? Do our reefs exist for the benefit of aquariums around the world? Kamala Harris is an appointed candidate. She is not elected. The Marxists, led by Barack Obama, selected her because she is a Marxist. Letter: Democracies threatened by autocracies

Alan W. Dowd in The American Legion Magazine of July 2024 comprehensively describes the plight of world democracies countering the expansionism and exploitation of one-man rule autocracies. I paraphrase him at times. In essence he says the free world needs “an alliance of democracies” against the autocracies of Russia, China, North Korea, Iran, Cuba and Venezuela. Deterring the autocracies requires the free world to increase defense spending and collaborating in mutual programs designed to enhance the capabilities of democracies to counter the provocations of the autocracies. ...
