Police identify man killed wreck on Hana Highway

Maui police suspect alcohol as a contributing factor in a Thursday night wreck on the Hana Highway that killed a 34-year-old man from Makawao. On Saturday, police identified the man as Douglas Roman. According to Maui police, a 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan was headed toward Haiku at approximately 10:18 p.m. when the driver failed to negotiate a turn at Maliko Gulch east of Maliko Bay Road in Paia. Haleakala Highway closed due to downed tree

At about 2:20 p.m. Thursday, Maui County officials alerted drivers that the Haleakala Highway has been closed at mile marker 3 for a down tree. All Lanes are closed. This report will be updated when more information becomes available.

Hiker rescued off Waihee Ridge Trail

Maui County emergency officials performed a mountain rescue Thursday morning after a 72-year-old male hiker fell and injured his leg. According to the Maui Fire Department, a rescue engine and aircraft were deployed around 9:59 a.m. to the Waihee Ridge Trail. Rescuers aboard the aircraft found the hiker and were able to lift the individual out of the area.
