Trace levels of selenium detected in Kaunakakai water system

Routine water quality testing recently identified trace levels of selenium in the Kaunakakai water system, which serves the Kaunakakai area of Molokai, according to the Maui County Department of Water Supply. Selenium is a naturally occurring mineral element found in soil, rocks and mineral deposits. Small amounts can enter drinking water through the natural erosion of these mineral deposits. Maui County receives $3.6 million for West Maui waste center

Maui County has been awarded more than $3.6 million in federal funding to establish the first recycling and waste collection center in West Maui, county officials announced Friday. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded the county a $3,607,065 Solid Waste Infrastructure for Recycling grant. The money will be used to acquire property and develop a center where residents can dispose of recyclables, green waste and bulky items.
