New book details lives of Filipinas
Patricia Brown will launch her latest book, “FILIPINAS! Voices from Daughters and Descendants of Hawaii’s Plantation Era” from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Binhi At Ani, 780 Onehee Ave., Kahului. The event is expected to feature six storytellers from Maui.
The book contains a collection of 67 statewide storytellers and collaborators who share details about their early immigrant ancestors and themselves. These storytellers shed light on cultural habits, spiritual beliefs, and roles Filipinas continue to play in Hawaii.
“Recording the stories of the first-generation Filipinas, she presents a tapestry of experiences that have rarely been heard and yet forms an important part of Hawaii’s historical record,” said Jeffrey Higa, executive director of Hawaii’s Plantation Village.
Brown is an editor and author who has spent 20 years working as a psychologist and educator with kindergarten through 12th-grade students in California and counseling graduate students at Chaminade University in Honolulu.
