A taste of portuguese culture
First Photo: Portuguese Association of Maui member Colleen Lopes demonstrates the traditional way of making her family’s bread and rolls Saturday during the Portuguese Fest at the Cameron Center in Wailuku. Lopes said she learned to bake bread from her grandmother Isabel Diego, one of the famed “bread ladies” of Holy Ghost Church. The well-used pans she used for her demonstration Saturday belonged to Cecilia Lopes of Kula, her husband’s grandmother.
Second Photo: Lining up for samples of Lopes’ cinnamon bread are Salt Lake City mom Emalia Tillotson and her children Ethan, 3, Alyssa, 5, and Makenzie, 8. Emalia said they read about the event in the newspaper and, since she is one-sixteenth Portuguese, they decided to stop by for a taste of the culture.
