Fishing rules subject of 2 presentations on Saturday
Officers with the state Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement and the Community Fisheries Enforcement Unit will be at separate events at the Kihei and Mala boat ramps and Maui Mall on Saturday to provide information about fishing laws and interaction with protected sea creatures.
From 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Community Fisheries Enforcement Unit officers will be at Maui Mall to help educate people about Hawaii fishing laws, including specific rules for uhu, or parrot fish, and goat fish species kumu, moano kea and weke.
Attendees also will have an opportunity to learn about “Makai Watch,” a volunteer component of the unit, which is a pilot project developed in a public-private partnership with the state, Conservation International and the Harold K.L. Castle Foundation. Officers in the unit focus on enforcing fisheries laws and providing public education along 17 miles of coastline from Wailuku to Hamakuapoko.
To learn more about the unit or to report violations, call the Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement office at 643-3567.
Division officers will be the Kihei and Mala boat ramps from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday and Sunday and March 5 and 6. They will be joined by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and U.S. Coast Guard officials.
They will offer information about humpback whales, monk seals, sea turtles and other marine protected species and answer questions about the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary and bottom-fishing and state fishing rules.
