Lahaina town fireworks show is ready to blow
Organizers of the Front Street Fourth of July fireworks show on Monday night – the island’s only Independence Day pyrotechnics event – say they are in “very good shape” fundraising-wise but are “still a little short.”
Lynn Donovan, executive director of the LahainaTown Action Committee, said Friday afternoon that $45,000 had been raised. That amount was still short of the $50,000 goal, but it was more than enough to cover the $35,000 cost of the fireworks, she said.
“We are in very good shape,” said Donovan, battling a cold. “We are looking forward to a very great event.”
The fundraising will continue, she added.
Last year, the event, which includes entertainment and other activities prior to the night fireworks show, cost about $49,000, she said. About $52,000 was raised and the carryover is part of the $45,000 accumulated so far for this year’s event.
“We are still hoping people will be generous and still donate,” said Donovan, whose nonprofit organization has taken the reins of the event.
The Lahaina fireworks go off at about 8 p.m. from a barge offshore along Front Street.
Front Street will be closed to vehicle traffic from 4 to 9 p.m. between Prison and Baker streets, the Fire Department said.
The fireworks show will be the culmination of a day of entertainment and other attractions, including stilt-walkers and magicians, at the Banyan Tree, Campbell Park, Lahaina Public Library lawn, the Outlets of Maui, the Wharf Cinema Center and Hard Rock Cafe. Events are planned from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Donovan noted that Lahaina’s Fourth of July festivities are drawing national attention, finishing as the third best American town to celebrate Independence Day, according to Travel + Leisure.
“We are doing well,” she said, noting that Lahaina moved up from the 12th spot four years ago.
Last year, an estimated 20,000 people attended the event. It’s hard to say how many people will be watching the fireworks this year, she said.
Donations for the Fourth of July event can be made through the LahainaTown Action Committee website at visitlahaina.com/donate, by calling the Lahaina Visitor Center at 667-9193 or by mail to 648 Wharf St., Lahaina 96761.
