Maui Fair to feature horticulture exhibit and pie competitions

Entries of homegrown vegetables, fruits, nuts and flowers into the Maui Fair’s horticulture exhibit will be accepted Oct. 5 and 6 at the War Memorial Gym.

Drop-off will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Oct. 5 and 7 to 9:30 a.m. Oct. 6.

Entry forms are available on the Maui Fair website at www.mauifair.com and select schools. Contact Warren Watanabe at 281-9718 for applications to be dropped off at one’s school.

The University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, the Hawaii Department of Agriculture and various partners in the agricultural industry are assisting with the horticulture exhibit at the fair. There will be information on how foods grow, hints on cooking, and a look at the behaviors of local insects.

The Maui Master Gardener Program will be providing information on gardening questions throughout the fair, as well as selling natural Maui honey, vegetable seeds and plants.

The fair’s second annual pie competition will be held Oct. 8 at the War Memorial Complex.

There are two categories: the open category, for the first 13 non-professional registered entries; and a chef category.

Pies in both categories will be judged on taste, consistency (crust-to-filling ratio) and appetizing appearance.

The open winner will receive a Maui hotel stay and $250 cash.

Judging for the open category is at 4 p.m. Oct. 8 in the main entertainment tent and will conclude around 5 p.m. Pies will be prepared off-site.

The chef category will highlight professional island chefs. Prize is $150 cash.

Chefs must bring their entries to the main entertainment tent by 2:30 p.m., and judging will begin at 3 p.m.

Registration forms, rules and regulations are available at www.mauifair.com.
