Entrepreneur hopes Mauians are set to catch some air at trampoline park
New jumping joint could open as early as this summer
A more than 20,000-square-foot trampoline park featuring basketball hoops, dodgeball, fitness studios and more is bouncing its way to Maui — hopefully as early as this summer, the owner said.
Arkansas-based Ultimate Air LLC is looking at leasing a 22,000- to 25,000-square-foot facility, with trampoline equipment on about 11,000 to 12,000 square feet, co-owner John Caubble said in a recent phone call. He said that the rest of the park would be for private events, studio rooms and a concession stand.
“We chose Maui because family entertainment is what we love and what we do,” Caubble said. “We began to look at where are some of the great locations that people love going to and already have a large local population, and Maui is one of those great places.”
Caubble hopes to sign a lease for a facility in Central Maui this month and open the park by June or July. The park would mirror Ultimate Air’s flagship location in Jonesboro, Ark., which employs about 70 part-time workers and two full-time managers.
“The timing would be perfect with kids out of school and families visiting on summer vacation,” he said.
Admission cost to the Maui park has not been set yet, but the Arkansas park costs $15 for one hour and $5 for each additional hour, Caubble said. He said that people have told him that he has to charge more in Hawaii, but he wants to keep it affordable for everyone.
“We want to be one of those places that’s not just family friendly, but also economically friendly where people can get a little bit of relief,” he said.
Hours of operation are typically the afternoon until night, Caubble said. He said the park could stay open on weekends as late as 10 p.m.
Fitness classes are planned to be held throughout the week led by certified instructors, as well as dodgeball leagues for students and adults. Toddler time also is popular for 4-year-olds and younger, Caubble said.
“When you’re in there jumping for an hour or two, it’s a workout,” he said. “Sometimes we’ll have 150 to 170 jumpers and there’s a lot of moms and dads.”
There will not be a kitchen or restaurant inside the facility, but Caubble hopes to partner with a pizzeria to provide food and drinks as part of a party package. He said there will be a concession stand with snacks, but facility will not be making its own food.
“It’s going to have a really big open feel to it,” he said.
The future park already is getting calls from businesses looking to book the facility for team-building exercises. He said that the Facebook page also is generating buzz with people asking where the park is going to be located.
The Maui park will be the first of three locations the company owned by Caubble and his brother, Buddy, plan to open across the nation in 2017. The other parks will be in Missouri and Oklahoma.
Caubble and his wife, Leslie, visit the island often and plan to move permanently in May. They also own a small tourism business called the Road to Hana. He said that he is excited to partner with local schools, churches and business to host field trips and special events throughout the year.
“We’re not the savior of Maui, but we can provide family entertainment value that people are excited about,” he said.
One of the key principles of the company is religious faith as Caubble served 15 years as an executive pastor in his hometown.
Caubble said the most important aspects of his business are family and building relationships with the community. He also plans to mentor local employees, typically high school- to college-aged, which he does at the company’s flagship park.
“To personally be able to mentor and invest in that group of people from a ministry side of things — that’s what I love and enjoy,” he said.
