Police will close a portion of Front Street from Baker to Prison streets and ban parking on adjoining streets for Halloween events Tuesday in Lahaina.
The road will be closed to traffic beginning at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, an hour before the keiki costume parade down Front Street. Police anticipate reopening the road at about 11 p.m.
From 3:30 p.m. Tuesday to 2 a.m. Wednesday, parking will be prohibited on Front Street between Prison and Baker streets; on Dickenson Street from Front Street to the Baldwin House parking lot; on Lahainaluna Road from Front Street to Wainee Street; and on Papalaua Street from Front Street to the entrance of Lahaina Center.
Vehicles parked in those areas will be cited and towed at the owners’ expense.
Police said 80 to 100 officers are expected to be working in Lahaina during the Halloween events, which will include entertainment in Banyan Tree Park and Campbell Park and an adult costume contest.
Officers will be on alert for violations including drinking alcohol in public areas and open lewdness. Officers will inspect replicas of guns, knives, swords or other weapons used as part of costumes and confiscate those that are found to be real or used in a dangerous manner, police said.
Also prohibited is the throwing of eggs, stink bombs or firecrackers, and any violators will be prosecuted, police said.
Police said costumes that pose a hazard to public safety because of their size or construction will be banned. Stationary performances, such as stopping to play music or put on a skit in the event area, will not be allowed.
Except for registered service animals, dogs will not be allowed in the area.
More information is available by calling Lahaina patrol Capt. David Silva at 661-4441.
Police are reminding drivers that traffic will be slowed.
For those traveling to Lahaina, there will be Halloween Express Bus pickup and drop-off locations at War Memorial Gym in Wailuku and Kihei Aquatic Center. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online at the LahainaTown Action Committee’s Halloween page at visitlahaina.com.
