County to present concept for new Waiehu clubhouse
The Maui News
A preliminary concept for a new clubhouse at Waiehu Golf Course will be on display during an outdoor “pop-up” community event on Saturday at the Richard “Pablo” Caldito Park, the county has announced.
The event will be from 9 a.m. to noon at the park, which is located at the corner of Kahekili Highway and Halewaiu Street in Waiehu. People may drop in at any time.
During the open house, the county Department of Parks and Recreation will provide concept sketches on a series of panels, and residents can offer comments and speak directly to the project’s design team and county staff.
Waiehu Golf Course, the county’s only municipal golf course, is more than 87 years old. Its clubhouse was built in 1962 and has not been significantly upgraded. In fiscal year 2017, the department identified the development of a new clubhouse as a priority and received planning and design funding from the Maui County Council.
The concept was also displayed in December at the Velma McWayne Santos Community Center in Wailuku.
The concept design plan is scheduled for completion by the end of 2019. The department is working with a consultant team headed by Bow Engineering Inc. and includes Shimokawa + Nakamura (architecture), Munekiyo Hiraga (public outreach), GMK Consulting, LLC (financial analysis), Austin, Tsutsumi & Associates Inc. (civil engineering) and J. Uno & Associates (cost estimating).
