Asian Cuisine is shut down due to rodents, pests

Asian Cuisine & Sushi Bar in Kahului was closed Monday following an inspection by the state Department of Health Sanitation Branch.
The restaurant, located in the Old Kahului Shopping Center, received a red “closed” placard due to “extensive rodent and pest infestation,” the Health Department said Tuesday. The inspection Monday was in response to an anonymous customer complaint.
Health Department sanitarian and vector control inspectors observed rat droppings on surfaces, including countertops where food is prepared, on sloped vent hoods over pots and pans on the stovetop and on storage shelves.
Pockets of roaches also were observed, including in a plastic wrap dispenser.
Due to the extent and location of the pest activity, the owner voluntarily closed the restaurant and a red placard was posted, the department said.
Other food safety violations observed included:
• Unsafe cold-holding temperatures.
• Food not protected from cross-contamination.
• Improper thawing.
• Mold growth in an ice machine on food contact surfaces.
The closure of Asian Cuisine & Sushi Bar and the suspension of its food service permit will remain in effect until the establishment completes required actions, passes a follow-up health inspection and receives department approval to reopen.
The required actions include completing a thorough cleaning of all food and nonfood contact surfaces, ensuring holes and gaps where pests or rodents may enter are filled, continuing to contract with a professional pest control service to treat the establishment and eliminating all pest activity.
A follow-up inspection is scheduled for Thursday.
This is the fourth red placard issued to a restaurant on Maui in the last 2 1/2 weeks. Barefruit Bar and Ohana Tacos, both located at 3600 Lower Honoapiilani Highway, received red placards on Aug. 23 and Aug. 22, respectively. Paradise Supermart in Kahului was shut down on Aug. 27.
All three have reopened.
Barefruit Bar was given a green pass placard after a follow-up inspection on Sept. 5; there will be another inspection on Sept. 19. Ohana Tacos passed an inspection on Sept. 3 and reopened; another inspection is set for Sept. 19.
Paradise Supermart reopened under a conditional yellow placard. A follow-up inspection is set for Monday.
