Fire crews airlifted a man from Olowalu late Saturday afternoon after he suffered a knee injury while hiking in Olowalu Valley, fire officials said Monday.

Receiving the call at about 4 p.m., a Lahaina ladder crew hiked 2 miles along a stream to access the man, who was unable to walk. Firefighters packaged the man, and the Air One helicopter airlifted the man to the top of Luawai Street in Olowalu, where a Wailea engine crew had set up a landing zone.

Paramedics then transported the man to Maui Memorial Medical Center.
