The brush fire that began in Kahului on Sunday afternoon has been 100 percent contained, the Maui Fire Department said on Monday afternoon.

The fire was declared 100 percent contained overnight and burned close to 109 acres, up from the 50 acres that had been reported on Sunday.

“Crews have continued to work today to extinguish hot spots and flare-ups, as well as strengthen containment lines,” acting fire spokesman Chris Stankis said. “No notable damages have been reported. All roads are open. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.”

The fire was first reported at 1:01 p.m. Sunday near Pulehu Road between Hookele Street, Hansen Road and Hana Highway.

Crews were able to protect the baseyards of Maui Tow & Transport and T.J. Gomes Trucking Co., as well as the Maui EKO greenwaste facility.

The fire forced a partial closure of Pulehu Road and a total closure of Hansen Road. All roads had reopened by 10 p.m. Sunday.
