A 13-year-old boy was taken to the hospital for evaluation after being knocked down by a wave along the beach fronting the Honua Kai Resort & Spa in Lahaina on Saturday, according to a fire official.

At 4:10 p.m., first responders received a call about a 13-year-old visitor from Colorado who had reportedly been hit by a wave and fell on his head, Fire Services Chief Rylan Yatsushiro said.

The boy was on shore when Engine 3 arrived on scene. Fire personnel found him conscious and alert. The crew took full spinal precautionary measures, Yatsushiro said.

Medics then transported the boy to Maui Memorial Medical Center for further evaluation.
