California visitors Daniel and Sherry Shi recount Saturday in Iao Valley how they were scammed by a vacation rental listing on Craigslist. Daniel Shi said they and their two young sons arrived on Maui late Christmas Eve and took a taxi to a Wailuku address on Liholiho Street only to find it was not a rental. He said they talked to nearby neighbors who were up late and the couple they spoke to went to work calling around until they found the Shi family a room at the Courtyard Marriott Kahului Airport. One of the neighbors then drove the family to the hotel since they were unable to hail an Uber. “I called all over and could not find any place available,” Daniel said, his story sounding similar to another couple looking for an inn on Christmas Eve more than 2,000 years ago. Shi said they were scammed out of the deposit and several days’ rental fee. “The police said, ‘You are not the first one, or the last one either,’ ” Daniel said. Sherry said the help they received from the neighbors was a lesson in the aloha spirit. “We really appreciate it,” she said.
