Endangered birds topic of conversation

Hanna Mounce

The Friends of Haleakala National Park members will host Hanna Mounce, coordinator for the Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project, for a discussion about the efforts to try and save the most endangered bird on Haleakala — the rare kiwikiu or Maui Parrotbill — at 6 p.m. Tuesday during their annual membership meeting in the pool-side multi-purpose room of the Mayor Hannibal Tavares Community Center, 91 Pukalani St., Pukalani.

The Friends of Haleakala National Park’s business meeting, which is open to all, will follow Mounce’s talk. Ongoing programs and future plans will be discussed, and board members for 2020 will be elected. Refreshments will be served.

The Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project works to save endangered forest birds and restore ecosystems at remote forest sites on Maui.

Mounce will discuss the kiwikiu recovery efforts, including research, implementation, challenges and what the future may hold for the species.

The Friends’ membership dues are $30 a year. New members can join and current members can renew at the annual meeting or by clicking “join us” online at fhnp.org.
