Erosion of Maalaea coast to be discussed

A town meeting to discuss Maalaea coastal erosion will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Maui Ocean Center Sphere.

Presenters will address the extent of the erosion, methods of prevention and potential for restoration at the meeting, called by the Ma`alaea Village Association. The association said some properties already are facing damage and severe erosion.

The panel includes Michele McLean, Planning Department director; Tara Owens, UH Sea Grant Program; Jim Buika, shoreline planner with the Planning Department; Andy Bohlander, coastal scientist with Sea Engineering; Mike Foley, coastal engineer with Oceanit; and Sam Lemmo, Office of Conservation and Coastal Lands with the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.
