Live music, food at UH-MC ho’olaule’a

University of Hawaii Maui College will mark the end of the makahiki season with a ho’olaule’a from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday on the great lawn of the Kahului campus.

The celebration will feature live music, food trucks, makahiki games, craft vendors and fun for the whole family. Admission is free.

The Institute of Hawaiian Music’s own Kuikawa, plus Tarvin Makia, Leihuanani Keali’inohomoku and IHM students will perform on center stage. The food truck roundup will include Pastele House, Mo ‘Ono Hawaii, Al’s BBQ Pit, and Holo Holo Garlic Noodles.

Planning session for poi pounding hale

Hoaloha Farms in Waikapu, with the support of Hawai’i Farmers Union United’s Mauna Kahalawai Chapter, is building a community hale ku’i to host ongoing ku’i kalo (poi pounding) sessions and other cultural workshops. The group will also design and plant an adjacent food forest based on agroforesty and permaculture principles.

The community is invited to a planning meeting from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Hoaloha Farms in Waikapu. As the project moves forward, workshops and other educational farming activities will be offered.

During the event, HFUU board members will discuss the project vision and how people can get involved. This is a community-driven project, and ideas and kokua are welcome. Lunch will be provided.

Participants will meet at the Maui Tropical Plantation parking lot at 11 a.m., then travel as a group to Hoaloha Farms. Pre-registration is required by sending an email to HFUUMaunaKahalawai@gmail.com. Participants are asked to include their name and the number of people in their party.

MOKK offers scholarships 

The Maui Okinawa Kenjin Kai is offering two scholarships of $1,000 to graduating high school seniors from Maui who are of Okinawan ancestry or are children of members of the Maui Okinawa Kenjin Kai.

Applications are available at all high school counselors’ offices or at the Maui Okinawa Kenjin Kai office at 688 Nukuwai Place in Wailuku.

The application is due on March 25.
