Sharks sighted off South Maui

People were warned to stay out of the water from Keawakapu Beach to White Rock Beach in South Maui on Wednesday morning after sightings of several sharks, including one that bit a paddleboard, according to the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.

County ocean safety officers were called to the area at 9:44 a.m. Wednesday after a stand-up paddleboarder reported a 10-foot tiger shark fronting the Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort.

Ocean safety officers, who entered the water on rescue watercraft, reported the possible sighting of three tiger sharks at least 10 feet long. Officers also reported that “at least one shark had been aggressively following a group of stand-up paddleboarders, who attempted to fend it off with their paddles,” the DLNR reported.

No injuries were reported.

Shark-warning signs were posted and were expected to remain in place until at least noon today, after the area is surveyed to ensure no further shark activity.

Starting at $4.62/week.
