COVID-19 at a Glance
Latest developments:
• State Department of Health reported 78 new cases Wednesday, including 65 on Oahu, nine on Hawaii island and four on Lanai that were announced Tuesday evening but not included in the official count.
• Health officials on Lanai say cases have risen to at least 20, though they were not included in Wednesday’s official count.
• There now have been 14,233 cases statewide, including 12,617 on Oahu, 1,091 in Hawaii County, 417 in Maui County (including 19 on Molokai and four on Lanai) and 60 in Kauai County. A total of 48 cases have been diagnosed out of state. One case from Hawaii island was removed due to updated lab information.
• DOH reported 14 deaths on Wednesday, 10 as a result of updated information from nursing homes in Hawaii County. The deaths ranged from mid-September to early October; three were hospitalized at the time of their death. Of the 10, eight were males and two were females, all in the 70 to 80-plus age range and all nursing home residents. The four other deaths were on Oahu – one male over 80 with an underlying condition who was a community care home resident and three females over 80 with underlying conditions who were hospitalized.
• There have now been 203 deaths – 156 on Oahu, 28 in Hawaii County, 18 in Maui County and one out of state.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on identifying COVID-19:
• Fever and cough are symptoms.
• Most people have mild illness and are able to recover at home. If you think you may have been exposed to COVID-19, contact your health care provider immediately.
• Keep track of symptoms.
• If you have an emergency warning sign (including trouble breathing), get medical attention right away.
• Some people who are not showing symptoms could have the illness.
Methods for preventing illness include:
• Washing hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating and after nose-blowing, coughing or sneezing.
• If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol.
• Avoiding touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
• Avoid contact with people who are sick; stay home if sick.
• Wear a face mask in public settings. The mask is intended to protect others.
• Social distancing: Stay 6 feet apart from others.
• Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily. This includes tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets and sinks.
