Inmate dies after found unresponsive

A Maui Community Correctional Center inmate who was found unresponsive in his cell Monday afternoon was pronounced dead at the hospital Wednesday afternoon, according to the state Department of Public Safety.

Lewellyn Foster Jr. died at 1:42 p.m., the department reported.

It said official determination of the cause of his death is pending review by the medical examiner’s office.

Foster was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center after he was found unconscious and unresponsive around 1:30 p.m. Monday, according to the Department of Public Safety.

Foster, 36, of Kahului was being held at the jail without bail while awaiting trial on charges including second-degree murder in the killing of a 90-year-old woman during a burglary of her residence at Harbor Lights Condominiums in June 2019. He also was charged with first-degree robbery and first-degree burglary.

In other pending cases, Foster was charged with third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, credit card theft, fraudulent use of a credit card, theft and habitual property crime.
