Police ID victims of murder-suicide

Police identified a man and woman found dead in an apparent murder-suicide last month as 95-year-old Arthur Leva and his 94-year-old wife, Maria Leva, of Kihei.

A .38-caliber revolver was recovered at the scene Jan. 8 when police found the couple in a vehicle off Maui Veterans Highway, police said.

Police provided the names of the couple and information about the weapon on Thursday, following an initial request by The Maui News on Jan. 13 and another request Wednesday. Police did not respond to a question on whether it was determined who did the shooting.

In a news release Jan. 8, police said the man and woman suffered apparent gunshot wounds.

That day, police officers were sent to a Kihei residence at 10:58 a.m. after receiving a call from GPS Pendant Alarm. The caller reported hearing what sounded like gunshots while communicating with a subscriber by phone.

Police found the subscriber’s residence unoccupied, but the company tracked the subscriber to the location where police found the man and woman in the vehicle, police said.
