Rain brings threat of flash flooding

A flash flood watch has been issued for Maui County from 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday afternoon.

A persistent trough aloft will bring the potential for a prolonged period of rainfall to windward portions of Maui, while increasing ground saturation from repeated heavy rain bands will produce an increasing threat of flash flooding through the weekend, the National Weather Service warned.

Flood-prone roads and other low-lying areas may be closed due to elevated runoff and overflowing streams, the weather service added. Landslides may also occur in areas with steep terrain.

If residents encounter heavy rain or rising waters, they should head to higher ground immediately, the weather service said. They should also avoid crossing fast-flowing water in a vehicle or on foot.

Starting at $4.62/week.
