Rain, winds and high surf hit islands

Heavy rains continued across Maui County, with the Puu Alii gauge on Molokai recording 9.27 inches of rain over a 24-hour period, the highest in the state on Wednesday.
The Puu Kukui gauge in the West Maui Mountains nearly matched Molokai’s rainfall with 9.22 inches of rain over a 24-hour period ending at 3 p.m. Wednesday. The West Wailuaiki gauge in East Maui recorded 7.08 inches of rain over the same period.
High winds and surf also hit the islands. Lanai was under a wind advisory through Wednesday night, with northeast winds of 25 to 30 mph and localized gusts over 45 mph expected.
The National Weather Service extended a high surf advisory for east-facing shores of Molokai and Maui until 6 p.m. today.
Waves were expected to reach 5 to 8 feet Wednesday night and build to 7 to 10 feet today.
