Property taxes hearing to be held Wednesday

The Maui County Council will hold a public hearing at 6 p.m. Wednesday on real property tax rates for fiscal year 2022, which begins July 1.

The hearing will be televised on Akaku channel 53. It will also be livestreamed on mauicounty.legistar.com.

The proposed classifications and range of rates being considered by the council are:

• Owner-Occupied:

Tier 1: Up to $600,000-$800,000, $1.66 – $2.61

Tier 2: $600,001-$800,001 to $1,500,000-$2,500,000, $1.66 – $2.90

Tier 3: More than $1,500,000 to more than $2,500,000, $1.66 – $4.50

• Non-Owner-Occupied:

Tier 1: Up to $600,000-$1,000,000, $4.40 – $6.60

Tier 2: $600,001-$1,000,001 to $1,500,000-$2,500,000, $4.60 – $7.20

Tier 3: More than $1,500,000 to more than $2,500,000, $5.50 – $10.00

• Apartment, $5.00 – $7.45

• Hotel and Resort, $9.37 – $16.41

• Timeshare, $14.40 – $16.41

• Short-Term Rental

Tier 1: Up to $600,000-$800,000, $10.00 – $16.41

Tier 2: $600,001-$800,001 to $1,500,000-$2,500,000, $11.00 – $16.41

Tier 3: More than $1,500,000 to more than $2,500,000, $11.00 – $16.41

• Agricultural, $4.66 – $5.94

• Conservation, $4.80 – $6.43

• Commercial, $5.60 – $7.29

• Industrial, $7.00 – $7.48

• Commercialized Residential, $3.35 – $4.60

All rates are based on $1,000 of net taxable assessed value.

No decision making by the full council will occur on Wednesday. However, the Budget, Finance and Economic Development Committee will reconvene on Thursday to make its final recommendations on classifications, tiers and rates, according to Office of Council Services staff.

On May 14, the council will hold another public hearing where the resolution adopting the property tax rates for fiscal 2022 is scheduled for action.
