Volunteers sought for food giveaways
Maui Economic Opportunity on Molokai is looking for “three or four strapping individuals” to help with monthly federal food surplus and kupuna distributions.
The federal surplus food distribution, part of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, occurs every third Thursday of the month, except for December, when it takes place on the second Thursday due to barge availability.
The next event is set for May 20 at MEO Molokai at 380 Kolapa Place.
MEO receives food from the Maui Food Bank, including fresh produce from Molokai and Maui farmers, picks up items from the barge and transports the goods to MEO offices in Kaunakakai.
In addition to the federal food surplus program, 65 food boxes are distributed to kupuna in the Commodity Supplemental Food Program, with each box weighing 25 to 30 pounds.
MEO is seeking volunteers who are able to carry boxes of that weight, can follow instructions and are willing to help where necessary. Volunteers can call (808) 553-3216 or email yolanda.reyes@meoinc.org.
