The Transportation Security Administration is looking to hire additional security officers at the Kahului Airport, with new workers eligible for a $1,000 recruitment incentive.

TSA is seeking 25 full- and part-time employees at Kahului, with a starting hourly rate of $22.17. As an incentive, TSA will pay newly hired transportation security officers $500 upon starting and $500 after one year of service. To qualify, the employee must come onboard between now and Sept. 30, TSA said in a news release Tuesday.

TSA will host a recruitment event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at the Wailea Beach Resort at 3700 Wailea Alanui Drive. Interested candidates will attend an information session to learn more about applying to become a security officer, take a computer-based test to evaluate aptitude and English language proficiency and participate in a structured interview session.

The session and preliminary hiring process can take between three and four hours, so TSA recommends candidates arrive early in the day.

Candidates must have two valid forms of state or federal identification, as transportation security officers in Hawaii are federal employees. Individuals of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Benefits include paid training, annual and sick leave, health care plans for full- and part-time employees and a generous retirement plan. Transportation security officers are also eligible for up to $5,000 per year in college tuition reimbursement. TSA does not prorate benefits for part-time workers, and veteran’s preference is not required to join the agency.

After six months, officers are eligible for pay increases, and those who work early mornings, evenings and Sundays receive a shift differential. Overtime opportunities, which are paid at time and a half, are frequently available.
