Men fined $250 each for taking turtle
Two Wailuku men were fined $250 each after they pleaded no contest Thursday to taking a green sea turtle that was found dead and entangled in fishing net.
Randall Del Castillo Sr., 57, and his son Randall Del Castillo Jr., 33, were cited for the prohibited activity Oct. 3.
A state Department of Land and Natural Resources conservation officer on routine patrol at 6:50 a.m. reported finding the turtle, a protected species, after seeing the men retrieving a lobster net from a shoreline area known as Round Tables in Waiehu, according to DLNR. The turtle had been placed in a metal tub, the agency reported.
The two men appeared in Wailuku District Court on Thursday.
