Reusable utensil kits offered for Earth Day

Maui County and local company HuiZero will distribute reusable utensil kits and reusable takeout containers at participating businesses to celebrate Earth Day.

For a $10 deposit, customers at restaurants and food trucks that participate in the HuiZero reuse program on Maui will receive their food order in a HuiZero reusable stainless steel takeout container. They will also get a free “BYO!” utensil kit that contains a reusable fork, knife, spoon, chopsticks, straw and a straw cleaner in a durable neoprene pouch.

The county is giving out 1,000 of the free kits, which will be available while supplies last.

Customers may keep the utensil-filled pouch and exchange the container for more takeout plate lunches at any of the participating restaurants or food trucks. HuiZero containers may be redeemed for a deposit refund or credit for a future food purchase at any time.

The program stems from the new county ordinance that went into effect March 1 and bans the use or sale of single-use plastic foodware.

Starting at $4.62/week.
