Man accused of assaulting woman, faces felony charge

The Maui News

WAILUKU — A man was arrested for allegedly assaulting and threatening a woman in front of their child Tuesday night.

Kaulana Aina, 29, of Wailuku was charged with felony abuse, violating an order for protection, second-degree assault and first-degree terroristic threatening.

The woman invited Aina to meet at a Kahului restaurant, which was in violation of a court order prohibiting Aina from having contact with her except for exchanging their child, Deputy Prosecutor Karen Droscoski said during his initial appearance Thursday in Wailuku District Court.

She said Aina, the woman and child were having dinner before she and Aina got into an argument.

They were in her car when he struck her three times in the face and head, pulled her hair and bit her wrist, Droscoski said. “This is all in front of their 4-year-old child who had crawled out of the back seat into the front seat while they were fighting,” she said.

The prosecution asked for bail to be increased from $8,000 to $10,000 for Aina.

Deputy Public Defender William Pannell asked for Aina to be released on supervision or to have his bail reduced to $1,000. He has a full-time job but has been off work recently after having surgery, Pannell said.

He said Aina lives with his mother. “He’s also denying these allegations,” Pannell said.

Judge Lauren Akitake kept bail at $8,000.

Aina was ordered to have no contact with the woman and to abide by requirements of the protective order.

Starting at $4.62/week.
