Kahekili Highway has reopened after authorities closed a portion of the road from Kamaile Street and Waiehu Beach Road due to a nearby brush fire, one of several on Thursday afternoon that officials suspect were intentionally set.

The Maui Fire Department said it responded to seven brush fire calls in Central Maui between 1 to 2:30 p.m. that appeared suspicious and were under investigation. Most were small and quickly contained, with the largest burning 5 acres on Maui Veterans Highway near the National Guard armory.

“It is suspected these are being set intentionally,” Mayor Michael Victorino said during the county’s news conference on Thursday afternoon. “We have video and some footage of a vehicle that has been seen in more than half of these locations. We also have a partial plate number and a description of a couple individuals who have been seen.”

According to the Fire Department, the first fire was reported on Amala Place in the area of the Wastewater Treatment Plant, burning about a quarter-acre of brush within the Kanaha Pond Wildlife Sanctuary. As of 5 p.m., it had been extinguished.

The second fire was reported on Wahinepio Street at Keopuolani Park. It was also quickly extinguished and burned about 1,000 square feet of brush.

The third fire was reported in heavy brush mauka of Kahekili Highway. As of 5 p.m., it had burned about 3 acres and was 90 percent contained. Crews were still on scene working to contain the fire.

According to the Maui Police Department, the blaze forced the evacuation of two homes off Kamaile Street. No damages were reported.

Authorities temporarily closed down Kahekili Highway from Kamaile Street to Waiehu Beach Road.

The fourth fire was reported at the intersection of Waiko Road and Waiale Road. It was put out by a private construction water tanker prior to MFD’s arrival.

The fifth fire, reported near the intersection of Hansen Road and Hana Highway, was quickly extinguished and contained to about 200 square feet.

The sixth fire, the largest so far, was reported on Maui Veterans Highway near the National Guard armory. Burning 5 acres of brush, it was contained within an hour or so by MFD and Mahi Pono, which provided heavy equipment support to cut a control line around the fire perimeter, the Fire Department said.

The last fire was reported in the area of Honoapiilani Highway and Pilikana Place. Crews responded but no fire was found, the Fire Department said.

No injuries or damages were reported as a result of the fires. MFD said the causes of the fires are suspicious in nature and currently under investigation.

“I’m warning these individuals and others if you are going to have fun on our behalf, be careful,” Victorino said, noting that authorities will prosecute “to the fullest extent of the law.”
