She works hard for the honey

The Maui News / MATTHEW THAYER photo

A Kihei honey bee collects nectar and pollen from the blooms of a Manila palm Thursday morning. While bees use nectar to make honey, pollen is an important protein source for colony life. Worker bees wet the dry pollen with juices from their mouths and pack the substance on the stiff hairs of their back legs. A “pollen basket” can be seen on this bee’s hind leg. Palm flowers are important food sources for island bees.

Starting at $4.62/week.
