Spending report: Bissen, Victorino lead mayoral candidates in campaign funds

Maui County mayoral candidate Richard Bissen Jr. raised nearly $252,000 in the last two months, about four times as much as his nearest competitor, incumbent Mayor Michael Victorino, who brought in $62,153.12 in contributions during the same period from April 26 to June 30.

Bissen and Victorino led the eight mayoral candidates in terms of funds raised and funds left over, according to the latest reports filed with the Campaign Spending Commission on Thursday.

According to the reports, Council Member Kelly King raised $48,010 (her reporting period was from Jan. 1 to June 30 due to the date she filed for office), while fellow Council Member Mike Molina raised $1,847 from April 26 to June 30.

The beginning of the reporting periods may vary for candidates depending on the dates that they filed their nomination papers.

Bissen, a retired 2nd Circuit Court chief judge, outpaced himself in the last two months as the $252,000 in contributions he received topped the $176,465 he raised in the first four months of the year. Bissen spent $173,885.39 during the latest reporting period and had $178,072.70 left in his campaign war chest at the end of the period.

Victorino spent $83,980.62 and had $131,005.04 left at the end of the reporting period on June 30.

The $62,000 that Victorino raised in the last two months was also more than the $56,655 he brought in during the first four months of the year.

King spent $9,115.09 and ended up with $45,704.77 in her campaign coffers. She had a different reporting period after entering the race on the candidate filing deadline of June 7.

Molina spent $2,817.93 and had $8,474.02 in campaign funds left over.

Some of Bissen’s larger and notable donations include $4,000 each from the Ironworkers for Better Government; Milton Thibodeaux Sr., president of TKH Construction; James J. Haynes II; and Dr. Lee Weiss.

Victorino’s larger and notable donations include $4,000 each from the ILWU Local 142 PAC Account and from James Falk, CEO/president of Jim Falk Valley Isle Motors.

Some of the larger contributions to King’s campaign include $4,000 each from Sulara James, Scott Young, Michelle Del Rosario, Michael Williams and Linda Love. Del Rosario is King’s campaign manager. Williams is part of Maui Tomorrow Foundation, an environmental and land use watchdog group.

Other mayoral candidates who filed spending reports are:

• Cullan Bell, who ended up with $6,805.73 in his campaign coffers, had contributions of $16,977.99 and spent $11,114.26. Bell’s reporting period was from Jan. 1 to June 30.

• Kimberly Brown, who had a deficit of $3,305.09 at the end of the reporting period, had contributions of $18,589.15 and spent $30,807.98. Brown’s reporting period was from Jan. 1 to June 30.

• Jonah Lion had $40 in campaign funds after receiving a contribution of $40 and spending none. Lion’s reporting period was from Jan. 1 to June 30.

Alana Kay’s committee has indicated that it will receive contributions and have expenditures that will total $1,000 or less during the election period, so the candidate committee will electronically file only a final election period report and supplemental reports. Kay’s last report from Jan. 1 to April 22 indicated that Kay had a deficit of $3,189.47.

All eight candidates will compete in the primary election on Aug. 13. The top two candidates with the most votes will head to the general election on Nov. 8.
